GRATEFUL FOR WHERE WE ALL ARE

When the emotion welled up in my throat, I was caught by surprise. It’s not so much that my kids are growing up…but that we have made it through so much. In many ways, we have reached the other side. The other side of what?

Pain. Trauma. Fear. Unjust suffering. Nickelodeon.

And yet, in some ways, we are still finding our way out of the mess.

I am on the road, and so today’s newsletter is short and bittersweet…

PROMISE ME I WILL BE OKAY

This boy turns 20 years old on the day this girl graduates from college. Milestones our family gets to celebrate; milestones not taken for granted.

After the shooting at Sandy Hook, Annie’s bedtime ritual was…well…a lot. She had a list she would run me through; questions she needed answers to before closing her eyes. The most difficult being: promise me I will be okay? In a recent phone call, I shared with her how difficult it was to answer that one. I can hope, surely. But promise? We had already experienced the unthinkable. And anyway, none of us were okay.

She chose Scripture for her high school yearbook quote:
